Acknowledging Matariki whetū at Hazelmere Kindergarten
Acknowledging Matariki whetū at Hazelmere Kindergarten
In preparation for Matariki, kaiako at Hazelmere Kindergarten are acknowledging three of the Matariki whetū (stars) within the centre environment. The three whetū acknowledged are Pōhutukawa, Tipuānuku, and Hiwa-I-Te-Rangi.
To acknowledge Pōhutukawa (the spirit star), a ‘remembrance’ table has been established and whānau and kaiako have been encouraged to place photos of loved ones who have passed on, so they can be remembered during this time.
To incorporate Hiwa-I-Te-Rangi (the wishing star), kaiako have created a whetū (star) wall display. Tamariki wishes for the new year have been added onto individual stars with the idea that their wishes may be granted within the year ahead.
The final star that we have acknowledged is Tipuānuku (kai and rongoā star). Kaiako have engaged tamariki in preparing kūmara to grow shoots, which they will assist in planting during the coming summer months. Furthermore, the pumpkin that tamariki have helped grow and harvest from our mara kai will be used to make pumpkin soup during our upcoming Matariki picnic.
